The Biofilter® System
The Waterloo Biofilter® is an absorbent aerobic trickle filter in which dissolved organic matter and suspended solids are degraded by microbial action in an oxygenated environment. It duplicates the single-pass sand filter in treatment but in one-tenth the area. The Biofilter® has been extensively tested in the field with sewage wastewater from municipalities and individual homes and cottages, golf courses, trailer parks, restaurants, landfill leachate and other sources. More than 15 independent agencies have tested the Waterloo system at over 25 different sites and thousands of systems, both small and large scale, have been installed across Ontario and Canada, including the high Arctic, several states in the US, Korea and Europe.
The key to the Waterloo system is the patented absorbent foam medium which allows microbial growth on the interior surfaces of the foam where they are protected and can grow out into large open pore spaces. As a result, plugging does not occur even at high loading rates. The filter media also allows for aerobic treatment conditions without the need for aerators or blowers in residential systems. High strength wastewaters, seasonal operation and weekend surge flows are also easily accommodated. Treatment in the Biofilter® is independent of soil and drainage conditions and therefore it is ideal for difficult sites with heavy clay soils, bedrock, high water table, or small lot size.
Landfill leachate can be effectively treated by the Waterloo Biofilter® and disposed of on-site. Experience shows that 98% of hydrocarbons and VOCs, and 50-95% of heavy metals are removed in the Biofilter®, thereby reducing contamination of soil and groundwater. Our systems can also be used as effluent polishers for existing wastewater treatment plants to allow for higher treatment levels and easier disposal.
Industry Leader
Our versatile systems are very robust and consistently remove 90-98% BOD, 90-97% TSS, 99% fecal coliform and up to 60% TN as shown by over 14 years of independent third-party testing. We offer options such as re-use for irrigation, above or below ground configurations, sub-surface or surface disposal, and remote monitoring.
Waterloo Biofilter Systems is a pioneer in the wastewater re-use industry with existing systems reusing disinfected effluent for golf course irrigation, toilet flushing, truck washing, and sometimes laundry, baths and showers. The proven Nitrogen reduction capabilities of the Biofilter® system also greatly reduce the effects of disposal on the environment, and can even allow for higher density development in environmentally sensitive areas than would be possible with traditional septic systems.
